Finding Success at the Young Brokers Conference

Customers are raising the bar when it comes to what they expect out of their insurance broker. We are rising to the challenge by arming our brokers with continual learning opportunities!

Attending #YBC2019 for Continual Learning

Each year, the Insurance Brokers Association of Ontario hosts an event called the Young Brokers Conference (#YBC19). The weekend brings together brokers under the age of 40 from across Ontario to network, build skills and to participate in some healthy competition in a Pitch to Win event.

This year, the conference was hosted at the Hilton Niagara Falls from June 5th to 7th. We were proud to send four of our young brokers to participate in the festivities and to bring back their enthusiasm and new insights to share with our team. Personal insurance brokers from London, Andrew Reaume and Emily Dominic, personal insurance broker from St. Thomas, Rebecca Grech and commercial insurance broker, Anastasia Edwards represented our team this year.

“The conference reassured me that in today's market, focusing on soft skills and the customer experience is what is going to keep you afloat,” shares Emily. “It was a fantastic learning and networking opportunity, which I am so proud that I got to be a part of this year!”

The conference included sessions on personal branding, effectively positioning insurance products, selling on more than price and negotiation skills, among others.

Success in the Pitch to Win Competition

The professional development sessions were in preparation for the grand finale, a Pitch to Win competition where brokers competed in teams with their newfound skills and their extensive industry knowledge. We were incredibly proud to have our broker, Rebecca, on the winning team in the personal insurance category! Rebecca represented us extremely well, sharing her industry knowledge with her teammates and pushing outside of her comfort zone to present in front of a large audience.

“Winning the competition was extremely rewarding! We put ourselves in the client’s shoes and applied what we learned in the sessions earlier in the day to really personalize our service for her. I think that’s what set us apart!” reflects Rebecca.

The brokers participated in events designed to facilitate professional relationships as well as friendships and community. The brokers networked with insurance companies, restoration specialists and auto repair and rental firms, putting faces to the names that they often email daily. These relationships help to strengthen their positions as advocates for our clients.

“The best part was the sense of community I felt being involved in such a big event where I had so much in common with everyone,” says Andrew.  “It was easy to start conversations and make connections with people because we had similar interests and faced similar challenges, and that just made me feel like I was a part of something even bigger!”

We are committed to supporting continuous growth and learning for our team. If we all work hard, ask questions, find solutions and love what we do, we will be better advocates for our clients, and for ourselves.
